Meet Lorraine Steinberg

You moved to Baltimore 5 years ago from Memphis! What prompted this big move?

My move from Germantown TN to Pikesville, MD was prompted by needing a change in my life and wanting to still be near my family.

You are a returning member of our Mitzvah Month committee. How did you get involved with this volunteer initiative and what is your role on the committee?

I have been involved with Mitzvah Day for over 30 years. First in Lancaster, PA, then Memphis, TN, then here.  When the opportunity to get involved with Mitzvah Month presented itself through the Jewish Connection Network, I was very happy to help in any way possible.  My role is to help Kate Kirby plan and recruit volunteers for the direct service projects that take place on December 24 & 25.  I also help organize and plan for the winter care packages that volunteers assemble for distribution to partner agencies.

What is your favorite hobby or way to spend your free time?

When I’m not with my family I enjoy playing Mah Jongg and Mexican Train Dominoes with friends.

What are some of the ways you express your Jewish identity or “do Jewish’’?

Some of the ways I express my Jewish identity is by helping others.  Tikkun Olam is very important to me because no matter what you give or how you help, helping others comes back to make you happier.

What is a surprising fact or something most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that I grew up on the small island of Brigantine, NJ and I’ve lived in 6 states.
